Juan Amengual

I was born in Palma de Mallorca on February 6 in 1972, and I discovered the underwater world and freediving at the age of 9, when I began to practice spearfishing with my father. As a result of this first contact, my passion for freediving and the sea arose immediately.

This passion was later transferred to my sporting and professional life, which has passed through competitive freediving at national and international level and qualifying me as Freediving Instructor trainer.

In 2008 I was able to fulfil a former dream of mine by founding “Apnea Balear”, the first freediving school in the Balearic Islands and one of the pioneer centers in Spain specialized in sports and leisure activities through freediving.

I was actually born far from the sea, in Slovakia. When I was only 3 years old, I was allowed to splash around in the Adriatic Sea for the first time. Vacation by the sea was not just a luxury, but under the communist regime you needed a travel authorization.

Many years later…a friend tempted me to discover the underwater world when I was already living and working in Vienna. There I got my diving license with SSI in 2008. After the first diving safari in the Red Sea, I was fascinated and completely addicted to the marine world.
But I didn’t want to stop there, because another friend lured me with a try freediving course in Mallorca.

Apnea, also called freediving, has been an integral part of my training since 2017 and has therefore become an indispensable element in my life.
